Tarsar Marsar Trek

  • The Caucasus Mountains are a mountain range at the intersection of Asia and Europe

Overview

The Tarsar Marsar Trek is a quintessential moderate-grade, 7-day Himalayan adventure, celebrated as one of Kashmir’s most beautiful alpine lake treks. Starting from the charming Aru Valley near Pahalgam, the trail covers approximately 48km and takes you through a constantly changing, pristine landscape of dense pine forests, vast emerald meadows, and traditional nomadic Gujjar settlements.

The journey’s ultimate highlight is camping by the two stunning high-altitude glacial lakes: the almond-shaped, turquoise Tarsar Lake, where trekker’s camp directly on its shores, and the more secluded Marsar Lake, typically viewed from an adjoining ridge after a challenging ascent. Reaching a maximum altitude of around 13,500 feet, the trek is a challenging yet manageable option for fit beginners, offering panoramic views of peaks like Kolahoi and an unparalleled sense of serenity amidst Kashmir’s “Paradise on Earth” scenery.

How to Reach

By Flight:- Srinagar is served by the Sheikh Ul-Alam International Airport (SXR), also known as Srinagar Airport. The airport is well-connected to major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Chandigarh, with regular domestic flights from airlines like IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India, etc.

By Road:- Srinagar is well-connected to the rest of India by National Highway 44 (NH44), which connects it to Jammu and onward to other major cities. Both government-operated (JKSRTC) and private buses run services to Srinagar from nearby cities like
Jammu, Delhi, and Chandigarh.

By Rail:- Jammu Tawi is the most convenient stop, with numerous buses and cabs to Srinagar available. From Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Pune and Trivandrum, direct train connections are available.

Tips for Tarsar Marsar Trek

– Carry ID proof in original & 2 photocopies, 1 Passport size Photo

– Only postpaid sim card works in Kashmir

– Withdraw cash from Srinagar only
– Always carry a raincoat as the weather can turn at any minute in the mountains and especially on this trek.

– A trekking pole is a necessity as we encounter a lot of steep ascends/descends on this trek and a trekking pole reduces the load on the knees by as much as 30 per cent.
