The Ultimate Zanskar Circuit

  • The Caucasus Mountains are a mountain range at the intersection of Asia and Europe

Overview

This seven-day expedition plunges deep into the remote, high-altitude landscapes of the Zanskar Valley, beginning with a dramatic departure from Manali. The journey immediately offers an extreme contrast as we traverse the Atal Tunnel, moving from lush hillsides to the stark, barren terrain of Lahaul, pausing in Keylong for crucial acclimatization. The heart of the adventure commences on Day 2 with the major push over the challenging Shinku La Pass (5,000m+) to reach the administrative center of Zanskar, Padum. Based in Padum for three days, we delve into the region’s cultural and natural jewels: witnessing the rare Shila Waterfall, exploring ancient sites like Karsha and Stongde Monasteries for mystical sunset views, and driving out to marvel at the immense Drang Drung Glacier and the surrounding lakes near Pensi La. The itinerary culminates in a true Himalayan highlight: a rugged trek to the isolated Phugtal Monastery, famously built inside a cliffside cave, followed by a night of unparalleled stargazing while camping beneath the towering Gonbo Rangjon mountain. Finally, the expedition concludes with a reflective drive back to Manali, retracing the route and completing a full-circle experience of this breathtaking, spiritual corner of the Indian Himalayas.

Key Highlights

Shinku La Pass: Located at over 5,000 meters (16,700+ ft), this is the highest point of the road journey, connecting Lahaul and Zanskar.

Atal Tunnel: The expedition begins by traversing the 9.02 km long tunnel, which holds the record as the world’s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet.

Drang Drung Glacier: This is one of the largest accessible glaciers in Ladakh, stretching approximately 23 kilometers long.

Phugtal Monastery: Uniquely built entirely inside a natural cliffside cave, making it one of the most isolated and spectacular monasteries in the region.

Gonbo Rangjon: A massive, sacred rock mountain revered by locals, often referred to as the “God’s Mountain” of Zanskar.

Acclimatization: The stop in Keylong is crucial for high-altitude acclimatization before crossing Shinku La.

Connectivity: The new Manali-Darcha-Padum road via Shinku La significantly reduces the travel distance to Zanskar compared to the traditional route via Kargil.
